As a network marketer, branding is crucial when it comes to using social media and how you come across to people is going to have a big bearing on how many people take an interest in what you have to offer.

In the dating scene, profiles are the key to attracting people into your life you want to meet. In fact, in many cases, the profile is the make or break reason why someone will contact you or be attracted to you. It’s the same in creating interest in a network marketing business.

A recent report posted at mashable.com revealed the results of a study which showed how people looked at your Facebook profile, or any profile for that matter posted on social media sites. The results are interesting and you can use this information to your advantage.

In a nutshell, here are the four most important aspects of a profile that get attention:

- profile pictures
– job titles
– the people you know listed in the thumb nails
– prominent content

That’s just a quick summary but the profile picture is listed on top and that makes sense. It’s like window shopping; first impressions make all the difference. For branding purposes, it’s you people want to see, not a cartoon image or something way over the top.

Anyways, check out the images which revealed what the eye tracking study showed. This is pretty solid stuff if you are thinking of making an impression on potential prospects to your business through social media.

When potential dates, employers and friends glance at your online social profiles, what do they see? EyeTrackShop, a startup that runs eye-tracking studies for advertisers, helped Mashable find out by applying its technology to the profile pages of popular social networks.

The study used the webcams of 30 participants to record their eye movements as they were shown profile pages from Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Klout, Reddit, Digg, Tumblr, Twitter, StumbleUpon and Pinterest at 10-second intervals. What participants looked at on each page and in what order is recorded in the images below.

It’s not a perfect study. Thirty is a small sample size, and what draws attention on a profile likely varies depending on the content displayed. But we’ve hazarded making a few observations:…..

But most of us don’t get it until later in life; not until we’ve been weather-beaten to a point where we decide it’s too late to do anything about it or we get the inspiration to make something of what we learn and make a late rush to success.

We’ve been talking about how most of us self-sabotage ourselves either through being comfortable when we reach a minor goal or being afraid to have success.

In network marketing, the key to reaching the high income levels where you feel you’ve created an income safety net that will sustain you for a lifetime takes “pushing the boundaries” all the way. Most will give up after a certain point; mainly because we’ve been conditioned to give up. People have patterns and the truth is, it’s very hard to change those patterns.

But to change that pattern takes some work and it won’t happen overnight. Well, one of the people I listen to a lot online and consider him somewhat of a mentor is Harlan Kilstein. Recently, Harlan did a webinar with us and talked about how people hit a personal plateau and then give up. Among the personality types he talks about are the:

- the dabbler
- the obsessive
- the hacker
- the master

I guaranteed each and every one of you is one of those personality types mentioned above. The keys to long term success can be attained if you understand what personality type you are and what you need to do to get out of the pattern you’re in.

If you are at all serious about improving your chances of breaking out of the current pattern of self-sabotage you’re in and want to hit the master level and be like those people you want to be like in your company who are successful, then spend a hour and watch this presentation. But for today, I will talk briefly about the number one driving force to building a successful network marketing business. Ready for it?

FEAR…

Yes, it’s fear. If you can go into a network marketing business with fear driving you then magic can happen. Many people ask…”what do you mean by fear”? Well, the fear of failing…letting yourself down; letting your loved ones down and this is a biggie…letting your peers down.

I want to illustrate one case where fear drove someone I know to a six figure a month residual income in his network marketing business. I’ll never forget the night I heard him tell the story of why he decided to try MLM. He was one of those who hated anyone wanting to show him a business opportunity. In fact, he was one of the heckler types in the crowd who you would expect to yell B*#&hit.

Anyway, I go to his opportunity meeting to see what it was all about miffed that I wasn’t asked a lot earlier but that’s another story. There he was with microphone in hand talking about a business that changed his life and how it could change ours. Then he asked the question…”Who’s scared?” No one put their hand up and he frowned. “Well, I think you might be wasting your time. I’m looking for people who are gripped with fear about their future.”

He went on, “I’ll explain what I mean.” So he proceeded to tell us why he started with this particular company; it had nothing to do with the product but all to do with creating an income that could rescue him from an ordinary retirement and the looks of disappointment from his family when he would meet with them on retirement day. He would let them know how they needed to tighten their belts because this is all he could offer them.

He described it in such a way that you could see the emotion on the face of the people in the audience. Suddenly they were thinking with a sense of urgency.

And that’s the key. When fear creates urgency you become an unstoppable force. Can you see what we are getting at. It’s okay to be scared. Fear of the unknown is natural but successful people see past it to achieve their goals.

My friend looked past the unknown and saw himself standing in front of his family giving them a pathetic excuse as to why he couldn’t offer them more. It is that fearful image that motivated him.

Is this also the case with network marketing?

Could be but I needed to delve a little deeper and think I have nailed why people fail at network marketing?

Ready?

Most people are focused on making money when they should be focused on building a business. How about that? Does that sound familiar? Yes, we all want to make money and make it quickly but network marketing is the wrong model to make money fast. People become obsessed with making money and losing the sight of the fact that they should be building the business instead.

Does this sound a little like attraction marketing is at play here?

Instead of trying to get the sale it makes more sense to “teach the prospect” to such a point where the sale becomes almost inevitable; and with little push required from you.

So I thought how about a little crash course in building a business that will take care of the money making aspect. You’ve probably heard this before but are you applying it?

How To Set Goals & Win

Here goes.

1. Set goals…you need to set clear, achievable and measurable goals for your business. For example, you want to sign a prospect a week into your business. Is this achievable, clear or measurable?

2. You need to create a plan. The plan has to be time based and realistic. It has to be measurable and above all, practical. In other words, you have to give yourself every chance of achieving it. One of the things I like to do is breaking it down into daily goals. I remember several years ago my daily action plan was to deliver a set amount of flyers each day. This gradually built momentum which went from a trickle to an avalanche. But it was the daily action I took to create it. Write down your daily action targets. This makes a huge difference.

3. You need to review and evaluate your plan. This is crucial. Don’t ever get into a state of mind where it becomes a chore. You have to set your goals realistically; make them so you give yourself every chance of reaching them. This builds enthusiasm and instead of it becoming a chore, you look forward to achieving them. It’s all about feeling good about yourself at the end of the day. So summing up:

- is your plan achievable?
- is it realistic?
- is it time based?
- can you measure your results?

If no to any of these then review and adjust.

4. This is short and simple. You need to execute your plan. You need to take action and make it happen. Someone can give you the light switch but you still need to flick the switch. Make sense.

5. Continuously measure your goals. This is so crucial. Refer to point 3 above about evaluating your goals.

6. Never stop trying to improve your results. You do this by adjusting and improving your plan.

Okay, this went a little longer than I wanted it too but there is more to this that I wanted to add. We’ll look at it in another post. But the above should get you off to a flier with your business. Can you see why people fail doing network marketing? Focusing on building your business instead of making money is crucial.

We’ve written a couple of posts recently on guest blogging tips and I’ve put out an offer to you the reader to guest blog on InternetNetworkMarketingReview.com. The response has been good but unfortunately, the message about not sending in posts heavily slanted towards promoting a business opportunity has not.

Guest blogging is a powerful way for you to build your brand and generate leads. If you can get your articles on blogs that have traffic and some clout in network marketing then you are going to be rewarded with interested prospects: but only if you can provide content that adds value to their business and lives.

Seriously, I’ve lost count of the requests I’ve had to publish an article from readers who I’m appreciative of but I won’t use this blog platform as a place to promote business opportunities other than from a link to go from a published article to your site. One of my favorite online marketing blogs is ZacJohnson.com. He has recently posted an article from a guest blogger teaching how to get guest bloggers to write for your blog. This is some of the best tips on guest blogging I’ve seen. The tip about not letting your blog suffer is priceless.

A lot of bloggers think they can attract guest bloggers to their blogs if they keep on publishing just any content on their blog, and even though this seems to work for them initially the end result is that the quality of their blog suffers, the traffic and exposure guest authors stand to gain reduces and people start to feel less interested in guest posting for their blog.

I get a lot of guest posting requests for my blog, in fact, I get as much as 30 guest post requests in some months but I end up rejecting a large percentage of them. A lot of people will think that people will stop trying to write a guest post for my blog because of this but the result is that I keep on getting more requests.

Guest bloggers will start valuing your blog if they see that not just anybody is able to get published on it. People appreciate exclusivity, and they know that a lot of results comes from this. If you work more on rejecting the bad guest posts and only publishing the best guest posts you will start getting a lot more requests from people wanting to write on your blog. Only that this time, the requests will be from people wanting to contribute quality guest posts…..

One thing I notice is how similar many network marketing coaches are and each seems to be promoting the same message. Look, there’s nothing wrong with that because the message of how to achieve success in network marketing is usually strong and in the end, it’s up to the individual on how they act upon the training and coaching they get. In other words, it’s about taking action and the truth is, most don’t.

The other thing to consider is people in your team won’t all respond to the same style of coaching. Some like to be coached verbally and others like to be shown. Some respond to motivational videos; that is, music over words and vision and I’ve got to confess, that’s the way I used to “fire up.”

I didn’t really respond to being coached verbally and used to shut down. How about you? Show me in a tutorial or give me an inspirational video to watch or quote to read and you’ve got my attention. Is that weird or is that the way you like to be coached as well?

That’s why I wanted to share the following video from “100PercentSuccessTV” with you. It’s just as I described above…a video with music and words but it got my attention. Some of the quotes I liked a lot. For example:

1. We are not here to mark time…We are here to make a difference.

2. This business should be enjoyed, not endured.

3. Ask yourself, can people flourish in my organization. If they can’t, why should they stay planted?

That’s just some of the collection of quotes in the video. The second one is powerful. This is something you might want to get printed on a card and give it to each current and incoming member of your team. Enjoy the video.

Ty talks about passion in your network marketing business and it’s what the majority work of to stay focused and build their business. But he doesn’t entirely agree with that philosophy and cites his own passion which drives him to business success. He says you need to ask yourself…if you have a passion that drives your business building strategy other than your passion for the business, then you will probably need funds to be able to service it.

So he asks…how will you fund your passion? Figure out what your passion is and once you do, then you can work the vehicle that will help you to fund it. It’s a fascinating look at how passion will get you to achieving your financial goals. And don’t worry, it’s only about 30 minutes long.

I remember when I went to a business opportunity meeting the presenter got my interest when he talked about how his passion drove him to successfully building his business. He talked about his passion being his family and how he didn’t want to let them down. He placed a lot of importance in providing for them financially.

He said he would fast forward to retirement day and being confronted by his family with disappointed looks in their eyes. Reason being; he only had enough money in the retirement kitty for them to just get by. He wanted to be able to give them more. That image haunted him and drove him to build his business. That’s powerful stuff and got the fire lit underneath me.

I like to keep social media simple…in network marketing online, it’s very effective and perfect. But I still see people abusing it and making the big mistake of marketing on social media sites rather than interacting and teaching. Post after post about how to make money or join their business or how to get targeted leads for little outlay. I switch off.

Teach me something…

Earn my trust first…

In sex you have sexual foreplay…when you are looking at building a network marketing business through social media you need a good degree of social media foreplay.

Here’s a few points I wanted to give you about using social media to build a network marketing list. These are in no particular order but will give you a good start.

#1.  Go where the fish are. In other words, if it’s a network marketing, put yourself among those people with the same interests as you. Sites such as LinkedIn are a perfect platform for network marketers or people with a business interest. Like minds attract.

#2. You need to decide exactly what role social media should play in your networking business. It’s should be just one part of the prospecting equation and a great platform to be able to teach others and share valuable information with them.

#3.  Get to know people before you even start to talk business opportunities. They will check your profile out so most times they will know who you are and what you represent. Show an interest in them rather than promote yourself.

#4.  What type of social media strategies will you pursue? Have you decided? Firstly, don’t spam. Secondly, in network marketing you want to use your own name, not a pseudonym. But this is important; keep your personal profile separate from your business profile. Make sense.

#5.  Don’t waste too much time on social meda sites. Remember your ROI. People can spend hours on Facebook for example thinking they are building their business when in fact, all they are doing is wasting and using up valuable time. Devote a certain amount of time each day to social media but watch how much time you are spending on these sites.

#6.  Don’t waste your time posting stuff that has a low ROI. Stuff like what you had for dinner or funny jokes. Instead, post stuff that’s interesting and highly targeted to your ideal prospects.

It amazes me that people will waste months and even years trying to figure something out, thinking there’s a secret to it all when all it really takes is shelling out a few bucks for the answer.

Creating your own piece of real estate online is paramount to succeeding online. It’s what you create that brands you and attracts people into your funnel. Yes you can use third party web 2 and social media sites but trust me, unless you are creating something you own outright and is not at the mercy of being cut when somebody doesn’t like what you say, you will be continually “behind the eight ball.”
